LECTURES&PROCESS

week 1

In the first week of class, Mr. Martin introduced the concept of information design to the students and explained the overall structure of the course and the tasks to be completed. During this semester, we need to complete some exercises and tasks, some of which are individual and some are group-based. We were divided into groups in the first week and completed some tasks in class. The teacher introduced us to different types of infographics and assigned corresponding exercises. This exercise required us to analyze common things in life through observation, classification, and other methods, and extract relevant information to present it in the form of pictures. We not only need to complete the classification exercise, but also select the appropriate songs in the group for the subsequent text dynamic effect production.

week 2

Mr. Martin continued to explain according to the content of the course. This week, he explained the design principles of L.A.T.C.H posters for us. In class, the students in the group also made PPT for this purpose. Later, he collected the selected songs from various groups and played them in class. Then he explained the concept of word dynamic effect and the production process to the students according to the requirements in project 2. Mr. Martin reminded us to speed up the progress because time was limited.

week 3

no classes.

INTRODUCTION

Exercise 1: Quantify & visualize data

Core elements:

Convert everyday things into quantifiable data (such as buttons, building blocks, rainbow candy, coins, etc. )

Use graphics to present quantity, frequency and proportion (that is, extract data from life and correctly express the quantitative relationship visually).

Following the examples given in the requirements, I chose some colored sticks as the items to use.

Of course, during the process of completing the task, I needed to make their layout more reasonable and more design-oriented. I arranged them in the shape of a rainbow.

After completing it, I found some problems. These sticks only had color distinctions and no other differences, so I decided to find other items for further analysis and organization. Subsequently, I used coins and colored paper clips to complete this task.

Exercise 2: L.A.T.C.H

Core elements:

L.A.T.C.H means Location / Alphabet / Time / Category / Hierarchy.

A group of information is organized into a visual poster, and the principle of L.A.T.C.H is combined.

According to Mr. Martin's request in PPT, I chose Pokemon as the theme of this poster. Before I started, I collected some cases for reference. Then I started making. In this process, I realized the importance of information collection and classification, and how to better arrange elements and layout to present better results. First of all, I made a horizontal poster. After I conceived the general layout, I began to arrange elements. At first, my layout was loose.

Later, I wanted to add more content, so I changed the layout, changed the color of the background and added borders, and I added illustrations as decorative elements to make the poster more full.

Later, I made a vertical poster. Their contents are similar, but the layout has changed.

In these two posters, I show the attributes, living areas and evolutionary processes of different treasures by arranging different elements and symbols.

REFLECTION

Experience

In the Exercises, I finished two exercises, Quantify Data and L.A.T.C.H These exercises mainly let me learn how to organize and transform information into visual form, and then present data through graphics or simple visual elements. At the same Time, I also learned different ways of information organization, and tried to rearrange the information with Location, Alphabet, time, Category and Hierarchy to make the content clearer and more logical.

Observation

Information design is not only visual expression, but also information arrangement and planning. The structure of the original information is the most critical. Different information organization methods will affect the way readers understand the information. For example, the time sequence is suitable for the display process, while the classification structure is more suitable for comparing different types of content.

Findings

The first step of information design is to understand and organize information. Only when the content structure is clear can visual design convey information more effectively. These exercises helped me to establish the ability of information sorting, data analysis and basic visual expression, and also laid the foundation for subsequent projects.
